Essays on Music Therapy

Photography

Jessica Leza has been a student of photography for nearly three decades, learning first from her mother how to shoot black and white film on an old manual Pentax, then to develop the prints in an improvised darkroom set up on top of the clothes washer and dryer.

Her photography has been published by UNICEF (2007), given the people’s choice award for the Prix de la Photographie Paris (2007), and has been featured in art galleries and art shows around the world, including Festival Miden (Kalamata, Greece), the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, Ventura Artist’s Union Gallery (San Buenaventura, CA), Art House (Decatur, GA), and Houston’s M2 Gallery and Gallery 19.

Music

Original music compositions, scores, and recordings. These compositions and performances are not intended for therapeutic purposes. Many of these pieces were completed and performed in completion of the requirements of a bachelor of music in music composition from the University of North Texas.

These pieces have also been performed as part of the FILE Electronic Language Festival (Sao Paulo, Brazil), SoundLab VI – SoundPOOL (Cologne, Germany), New Genre XV (Tulsa, OK), Electric LaTex music festival (Houston, TX), and in CEMI Centerpieces and SPECTRUM performances at the University of North Texas.

Video

Jessica Leza’s experimental music videos have been featured in film festivals and music conferences across the globe. Bands such as My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult have used her videos during live performances. Drawing on early techniques of and stop-motion animation, claymation, and modern advances in digital editing, Jessica creates videos that complement the abstract or surreal nature of the musical compositions.

These music videos have been screened in the Boyle Heights Latina Independent Film Extravaganza (BHLIFE), Señorita Cinema, The Last Concert Café (Houston, TX), the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, Westheimer Block Party (Houston, TX), 91.7 KTRU Outdoor Show (Houston, TX), Selected Shorts at the Aurora Picture Show (Houston, TX), Tulsa Living Arts (Tulsa, OK), the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (Salt Lake City, UT), BigScreen International Film Festival (Kunming, China), Think Film (Brooklyn, NY), and Electric LaTex (Denton, TX).
